WHAT DO WE DO?

WHAT DO WE DO?

There are 3 phase of KHDC

1. Health promotion, including creating awareness

2. Screening for targeted NCDs and risk factors

3. Management of the detected disease/condition

For health promotion, different awareness programs are conducted on regular basis highlighting the problems brought by the chronic diseases. Introduction to various chronic disease conditions along with the ways to prevent them is focused on these awareness programs. Through these programs we encourage people to live an active and healthy life style acquiring healthy diet and physical activity. Along with awareness programs, health promotion is supported by active mass media awareness through social media and radio programs.

In screening program, general information like demographics, lifestyle and medical history are collected. The same day blood pressure and other vitals are measured, and venous blood is withdrawn for investigation of Serum creatinine, Fasting Glucose, Lipid Profile and HbA1c (for patient with history of diabetes and/or high fasting blood sugar) and urine sample is collected for Urine for routine examination. All these investigations are done free of cost in KHDC laboratory.

It can be simply summarized into an abbreviation ABCDE– A for Albumin, B for Blood sugar, C for serum Creatinine, D for Diabetes and Lipiprofile, E for Estimated creatinine clearance. As the results are obtained, patients with abnormal emergency reports are informed for a visit, where they get informed of their results and a management plan is prepared by Prof. Sharma and the team. Also, all the patients are followed up weekly with their report distribution and management is updated accordingly by the team based on the recent guideline.

KHDC is also working simultaneously towards the preventive aspect of diseases. It organizes regular community awareness campaigns through health promotion activities on the prevention and management of NCDs, with a special focus on hypertension, diabetes, chronic kidney, and cardiovascular diseases.

With the COVID-19 pandemic, due to multiple reasons be it government imposed nationwide lockdown or self fear of acquiring Covid 19, it was a difficult situation to the patients to reach upto the health personnel to regularly follow up of their diseases. So, KHDC Nepal in collaboration with HUG(Geneva University Hospital), Mechinagar Municipality and Locals from Mechi Abhiyan reached for the door to door visit to follow up the NCDs cases in Eastern region of Nepal and also organized capacity building training for the local paramedics and volunteers so as to mobilize resources for the optimum health benefits of the patients. The team reached over 6000 population in Mechinagar Municipality with the aim ‘Not to neglect NCDs even during COVID 19 pandemic’. Teleconsultation services was also initiated since the pandemic in order to facilitate the provision of continuous care and treatment to the patients diagnosed with Covid 19 and NCDs in rural communities.
